What kind of High Pressure Washer best for Paint Removal?

High Pressure Washers best for Paint Removal

High pressure washer, also called Power washer, are effective tools for cleaning the outside of a house. They also work well to remove flaking and peeling paint from wooden siding before you repaint. However, it's important to get the right size machine for the job. A DIY high pressure washer that provides too little pressure won't remove all the paint. One that sprays with too much power will take off the paint, and also damage the wood underneath.

Minimum Size
Use High pressure washers from 1,200 psi to around 2,000 psi to clean surfaces before painting but don't expect them to remove much paint. Stronger machines, starting at about 2,500 psi, work better to take off flaking or peeling paint. For more stubborn jobs, consider a 3,000 psi pressure washer, which can exert the force needed to break paint off the surface of the wood.

Process
Start by covering all outdoor lighting and electrical fixtures with plastic bags, closing the doors and windows and covering landscaping plants and lawn. Wear goggles and protective clothing to prevent damage from pressurized spray. Hold the nozzle between four and 12 inches from the painted surface, at about a 45 degree angle, to remove paint from wood. Avoid spraying under the laps of siding, or into vents, since this can cause moisture problems later.

Warning
According to Sutherlands paint company, very high powered pressure washers can damage wood or other paint substrate. Avoid using a pressure washer over 3,000 psi. Instead, work slowly and carefully to remove all flaking paint. Paint that won't come off from 3,000 psi or less can be hand scraped or simply painted over, as it is unlikely to peel.

Considerations
Using a High pressure washer makes things easier, but it won't keep you from having to hand scrape some parts of the house. Water blasting removes most of the peeling or blistered paint, but also tends to make the edges of remaining paint areas curl up. Allow the siding to dry, then use a scraper on these areas before painting to ensure a flat surface.

Can You Use a High Pressure Washer On Vinyl Siding?

Vinyl siding is one of the easiest types of siding to maintain and clean. Attractive, long-lasting vinyl siding can be achieved by keeping it clean. One of the fastest ways to clean vinyl is to use a high pressure washer, which is an appropriate and acceptable way of cleaning vinyl. Learn more about pressure washing to ensure that you do it properly and take the right safety precautions. Have a question? Get an answer from a cleaning expert now!

Using a High Pressure Washer
Properly using the pressure washer on the vinyl siding will create better results and will ensure that the vinyl looks better and lasts longer. Always spray the pressurized water so that the water jet is hitting the siding at a 90 degree angle. This will prevent you from pushing the water behind the siding. Always stand at least 3 feet from the siding and never spray closer than 1 foot otherwise you might crack and weaken the siding. Work from the bottom of the siding to the top to make sure that the entire wall of siding dries at the same time. This will ensure that you don't get water streaks.

Purchase vs. Rent Vinyl Siding
The decision whether to purchase or rent a high pressure washer will depend on your needs and circumstance. Purchase a pressure washer if you have a large house with a lot of vinyl siding that you want to clean regularly, but keep in mind that you can also use pressure washers to clean concrete floors and walls. Rent a pressure washer if you are cleaning a small area of vinyl siding or if you find that you don't have a lot of use for one. Contact your local hardware or home improvement store to rent or buy a pressure washer.

Choosing a High Pressure Washer
Choosing the right High pressure washer will produce the best cleaning results for the vinyl siding. Pressure washers that have adjustable pressure are more versatile. They allow you to use lower pressure for cleaning normal dirt and buildup and more pressure for removing tough stains like sap or bird droppings. For vinyl, you will not need to use more than 3000 psi to remove even tough stains. Choose a pressure washer that will allow you to dissolve cleaning solution in the water tank without clogging. This versatility will allow you to add bleach to the solution to remove mold or mildew.

Safety
If used improperly, high pressure washers can cause serious injury. Prevent this by always wearing gloves and goggles when the machine is on. This will prevent accidental injury from water pressure directed at your face or hands. Additionally, keep children and pets away from the area while working. Never pressure wash vinyl siding that might have lead paint on it.

Helpful tips on How to Clean House Siding

Helpful tips for cleaning exterior siding, including techniques for removing mildew and using a pressure washer
Is your home’s siding looking like it could use a facelift? If it is, a thorough cleaning may bring it back to life. Even when siding looks like it desperately needs a new coat of paint, it may really only need a good washing, that you need a high pressure washer.

Pressure washer for home's siding
You won’t be able to tell for sure if your siding needs painting until you wash it-which is an important first step if you need to paint. The challenge will be to do this as effectively and easily as possible, without damaging the siding.
The best way to clean siding will depend on the particular type of siding and the situation-your time, tools, energy, and whether your house is one story or taller.

pressure washer's cleaning
The most time-consuming—but thorough-way to wash all types of siding, from wood to vinyl, is with sudsy water, a hose, and a stiff-bristle nylon scrub brush screwed onto the end of a telescoping pole. For lower parts of the siding, you can just handhold the scrub brush.

before and after by pressure washer cleaning
To hand scrub siding, mix TSP or a non-phosphate substitute with water according to label directions (often about 1/2 pound TSP to 2 gallons of water). Choose a bucket that the brush will easily fit into. Then, wearing rubber gloves and any other protective gear recommended on the detergent label, scrub the siding from the top down, working in areas about 20 feet wide and the full height of the wall. If possible, work in the shade.

Rinse with clear water as you finish each 20-foot section. Scrub in line with the siding panels (horizontally for typical lap siding). If the siding has signs of mildew, see How to Remove Mildew From Siding.

Hand scrubbing a house is a big job. And the bigger your house, the more you are going to feel like you are in training. If your home is more than a single level, be sure you follow all ladder safety precautions.

To make the work much, much easier, consider using a High pressure washer but only if you have vinyl, steel, or aluminum siding. While pressure washing is a good alternative to hand scrubbing, be aware that it may not do quite as thorough a job.

If your siding is made of wood, brick, stucco, or has been painted with paint that may contain lead, don’t use a pressure washer as it can cause the paint to peel, erode the surface, and drive water into the interior of the walls.

The Car Washer Must Make Sure To Complete All Three Of The Necessary Steps

Of all the many jobs that people have to complete on a regular basis, the one that is often most forgotten is that of car washer. We all remember to act as maids around the home maintaining the interior and exterior of the home, but the car is taken for granted simply because it isn't as large and lasting an investment as the home. So instead of maintaining the interior and exterior of a vehicle as we should, too many vehicle owners neglect the necessary care and maintenance of their automobile.

When acting as a car washer, it is important to note that the interior of the vehicle requires just as much attention as the exterior of the vehicle. That means that more attention must be given than to simply remove all trash and debris that can build up on the inside. The upholstery and carpeting must also be maintained. There are upholstery cleaners for both the cloth and leather interior of the vehicle. The cloth upholstery cleaner is usually also effective on the carpeting. The car washer to protect the leather from oils in the skin and from attracting dirt must use the leather cleaner. It will also help the leather to maintain its soft and buttery texture instead of turning hard and cracking.

As a high pressure washer for car washing, the interior of the vehicle must also be vacuumed. And removing any lingering odors is also part of the task. Lingering odors can prevent a vehicle from selling or maintaining its trade in value. There are many odor neutralizers on the market today that will make this a simple task to accomplish.

The car washer must make sure to complete all three of the necessary steps involved in the exterior cleaning process as well. The vehicle must be cleaned using any variety of cleaning products. There are traditional methods that involve a hose and buckets, or there are new cleaning methods that are completely waterless. The cleaner is simply sprayed on and wiped off. The same is true for the polishing step and the protecting step.

High Pressure Washer, your best House Cleaning expert!

Pressure washing is the fastest and most effective method of cleaning

Over a period of time a house becomes covered with dirt, grime, and contaminants from a variety of sources: dirt-laden rain droplets, environmental pollution, mildew, moss and chalking paint. Peeling and flaking paint can also become an unsightly problem.

High Pressure washer is the fastest and most effective method of cleaning. If only dirt and grime is a problem, a power wash will brighten the house and painting may not be required.

Most situations, though, consist of a multitude of sins that require repainting and the key to a successful re-paint is surface preparation. Power washing will remove chalk, dirt, under-eave deposits, loose or peeling paint and minor surface mildew (bleaching is required for killing mildew). Power washing is 10 times quicker and more efficient than standard elbow grease. An entire house can be properly prepared in 2-8 hours depending on size and severity of contaminants.

Before & after cleaning
Proper selection of a DIY pressure washer and tip is essential. A washer with a pressure rating in the 2,000-3,000 psi will be needed if removing peeling paint is part of the job. Washers below 1,500 psi are not very effective and above 3,000 psi are more prone to damaging the substrate if not handled properly. Tip size is also important. A 15° tip is generally the most effective size and is a good "chiseling" nozzle for paint removal. A 0° tip can gouge wood and damage fragile surfaces. Even though water-blasting will remove almost all blistered, peeling and loose paint, many times the paint edges will curl up after being pressure washed. It's a good idea to use a scraper on these areas just prior to painting. Tips of 25° and 40° are more for "washing" jobs only. For stubborn stains, oxidation and mildew, many High pressure cleaner can be fitted with a chemical injector. When using a chemical injector, spray from bottom to top, then be sure to rinse from top to bottom with a 40° nozzle.

Before and after cleaning

A High pressure washer is very simple to operate, but it is not a toy. Improperly handled it can become a dangerous piece of equipment. Never point it at anyone or get hands near the spray tip. Stay away from power lines and care should be taken when on a ladder since the initial power burst could knock you off balance.

Your best cleaning choice

Here are some other tips to keep in mind:

1. Cover all electrical fixtures and outdoor lighting with plastic bags.

2. Close all windows and doors.

3. Cover lawn and landscape, this will avoid a messy clean up.

4. Protect eyes and skin; wear goggles.

5. Keep the nozzle 4 to 12 inches from the surface.  This distance will vary depending on whether it's concrete, wood or metal, and what you are trying to remove.

6. The spray nozzle should be directed at a 45° angle to the surface and used like a scraper.

7. Don't spray directly at windows, they could break.

8. Don't spray into un-caulked cracks or up under the laps of horizontal lap siding. Do not spray into vent openings on gables and soffits.

Cleaning
Don't limit yourself to just one job with a DIY pressure washer once you have it. It can also be used to clean gutters, autos, boats, patios, sidewalk barbecue grills, lawn mowers, swimming pools, hot tubs, fences, garbage cans, etc. Also, pressure washing weathered, wood decks and fencing can remove that decayed "gray look" and provide a sound base for refinishing.

How a Pressure Washer Pump Works

How a Pressure Washer Pump Works
Crankcase
A typical High pressure washer pump works by changing the rotating motion of a crankshaft into a back-and-forth motion of a piston or plunger device inside a cylinder. This type of pump is called a reciprocating positive displacement pump. The whole system works much like a car engine. Most DIY pressure washer pumps have either two cylinders (duplex) or three (triplex).

The two main elements of a High pressure cleaner pump are the crankcase and the manifold. The crankcase connects to the power source. The crankshaft's cams rotate and move connecting rods forward and backward, a motion often termed "reciprocal." Attached to the connecting rods are plunger guides that run from the crankcase into the manifold cylinders.

Manifold
Water exiting a High pressure washer runs through the manifold. Plungers or pistons, which rest tightly inside the cylinders, connect to the plunger guides with retaining bolts. The manifold also contains inlet and discharge valves, which enable the pump to maintain a continuous flow of water. The water travels only one way through the valves---in through the inlet valve and out through the discharge valve.

Valves control flow
As the crankcase rotates, the plunger or piston is drawn up in what's called a backward stroke. At this point, an inlet valve opens and allows water to enter the manifold. This happens because, as the plunger or piston is brought up, the volume in the chamber increases, lowering the pressure inside the chamber and triggering the valve to open.
The pump&motor--core part

The inlet valve then closes, and the plunger or piston begins its downward thrust. This forces the discharge valve to open, releasing the water through the hose and nozzle.
