Safest Room Air Purifiers

Did you know that some air purifiers actually add to the pollution in the air, releasing chemicals or compounds that may not be safe, especially for small children? Even the safest air purifiers can emit possible hazards like ozone and may not be a good alternative to simply cleaning, dusting and vacuuming regularly. Have a question? Get an answer from a doctor now!
Indoor smoke is a common reason to buy an air purifier.
Function
Air purifiers claim that they can remove air pollutants and toxins that cause allergies and general illness. Many Americans believe it, spending more than $350 million per year on air purification, according to Consumer Reports. Most air purifiers ostensibly clean the air with the help of ozone or by capturing particles with electrostatic materials.

No Oversight
The safety of air purifiers has not been reliably established, and no standards in air purification exist. The Environmental Protection Agency neither approves purifiers nor advocates their use. Air purifiers may have an EPA identification number, but this only establishes the manufacturer's identity.

Ozone
Many air purifiers either use ozone to clean air, or give off some ozone as a byproduct of detoxification, reports the EPA. The EPA advises against buying a strict ozone generator due to the health risks associated with ozone. Ozone often forms the the haze you see in highly polluted cities such as Los Angeles. Too much ozone can cause respiratory problems. Ozone generators may be less safe than other air purifiers that use ionization of particles or other methods that do not rely on chemical compounds.

The Safest Method
Even electrostatic cleaners emit some ozone and can become hazardous, depending on the size of the room they are in. The emission quantities may be well below what the EPA recognizes as safe for human beings, but they can quickly build up in a small room.

Consumer Reports tested various air purifiers and found that whole-house air filters may be the safest and most effect air filtration system. A whole-house filter replaces standard furnace filters and generates no ozone.

Prevention/Solution
Manual cleaning is the best way of reducing air pollutants indoors, according to the EPA. Limit the generation of indoor smoke from products such as candles and tobacco. Vacuum more frequently and do not store chemicals, cleaners and fuels in the house.
