Air Purifier Health Benefits

Air Purifier Health Benefits
More and more studies have shown that air purifiers can significantly reduce the many harmful contaminants found indoors by filtering them from homes and workplaces. Installing these machines can eliminate pollutants that cause some of the most common upper respiratory illnesses, colds, allergy irritation and asthma. Have a question? Get an answer from an appliance repair specialist now!

Air purifier

The ultimate health benefit of air purifiers is the newfound ability to breathe easily without the numerous harmful particles that cause increasing instances of illnesses for greater numbers of people.

Function
By directing air through a filter, air purifying devices catch the potentially harmful airborne pollutants that cause a range of illnesses and are especially threatening to sufferers of allergies and asthma. When indoor air is sent multiple times through a filter, the machine is able to catch particles both large and small, ultimately purifying the air up to 97% and freeing the inhabitant of unsafe contaminants such as dust, pollen, bacteria, spores and viruses.

Potential
A decent air purifier will provide health benefits through removal of most of the airborne particles within a room or building, reducing the chances of allergy symptoms among those who live there. Since it is estimated that indoor air pollutants directly cause or worsen nearly half of all major health problems, removal of these harmful materials can prevent colds, asthma, headaches and allergic irritation of the nose and eyes, among other maladies.

Considerations
While air purifiers can greatly alleviate many common symptoms, it is important to remember that these machines alone have not been proven to prevent allergy symptoms. Air filters are able to block airborne toxins before they are inhaled, but not those potentially harmful particles that are already absorbed by walls or household objects.

Instead of relying solely on air purifiers to prevent particles from circulating, proper ventilation, including occasional airing out of the home or office, is key. Before purchasing an air filter, it is wise to first try and determine what types of airborne pollutants exist in the room or building.

Warning
The potential health benefits of air purifiers can be negated by the unwanted effects of certain types of filters that produce ozone. Generally, this occurs with electrostatic or ionic air purifiers, which electrostatically charge the initial harmful airborne particles but also leak ozone in the process. The result can be illness of the lungs, chest pain and intensified asthma and allergy symptoms.

To avoid ozone-emitting filters and get the most health advantages out of air purifiers, industry experts advise using HEPA filters, as they have been proven highly effective in filtering indoor air without projecting any side products.

Expert Insight
Air filter expert Jim Rosenthal of AllergyClean.com encourages readers to employ a comprehensive approach to allergy-related asthma reduction rather than depending completely on air purifiers to do the job.

This means buying dust mite-proof mattress and pillow coverings, as these particles cause a large share of allergic symptoms in the home. Rosenthal sites the Inner City Asthma Study, which demonstrated the heightened effectiveness of using HEPA air filters in conjunction with mite-resistant bed coverings.

How to Use Air Purifiers?

Air purifier
If you have allergies or asthma, an air purifier can greatly improve your quality of life. Air filters remove dust, pollen, mold and many other environmental pollutants which can trigger both asthma and allergies and exasperate colds and other upper respiratory infections. Keep in mind that an air purifier is not a magical wellness box. It needs to be used properly to be effective. Have a question? Get an answer from an appliance repair specialist now!

Things You'll Need:
Air purifier
Air purifier Model:AP-1101
Instructions

1.Get a big enough air filter. There are some small filters that work great in cozy rooms but aren't going to do the trick in a big living room. Air filters usually come with recommendations which tell you how big a room they should be used in.

2.Clean and maintain your air purifiers regularly. HEPA air filters need to have their filters replaced, whereas electrostatic filters need to be taken out and cleaned. Many air filters have automatic warning lights that tell you when they need to be cleaned.

3.Keep doors and windows closed. Air purifiers are not very effective when air is continually moving in and out of the room. If you like a breeze during the day, turn the air purifier off to save energy. Then, close the windows at night and run the filter.

4.Put the air purifier near to any known source of dirty air. Air ducts can circulate a lot of dust along with heated air, so you might want to keep your air purifier near the duct.

5.Keep your room clean. An air purifier can only do so much. You need to regularly remove dust from the air and discourage the growth of mold through good housekeeping.

6.Don't block the filter. Make sure the intake vents and the air output are at least a few feet away from any nearby objects.

Do Air Purifiers Help Get Rid of Smoke Smell?

Air Purifiers Help Get Rid of Smoke Smell

Air purifiers are machines that clean the air that passes through them. While allergens such as spores and pet dander are often cleaned out of air, smoke and the smells that it causes are also a target.

Function
An air purifier works through electrostatic charges. Plates in the air purifier are charged, creating an attraction for particles in the air; these particles then adhere to the plates, thus taking them out of the air.

Smoke
Smoke is filtered out when an air purifier is used. However, if the smoke manages to adhere to the floor, ceiling or furniture, then the odor will only be reduced and not eliminated.

Motors
Motorized air purifiers have a fan in them, and that fan draws in more air (and smoke), which can then be purified more quickly.

Cleaning
When the plates are removed from an air purifier to be cleaned, the particles could be re-released into the air. To avoid this, be careful and follow any instructions provided.

Additional Efforts
Generally speaking, an air purifier will not be enough to clean the air and eliminate smoke on its own. It should be a part of a multiple-step attempt to keep the air clean, such as leaving out coffee grounds to help absorb odors.

Will an Air Purifier With an Ionizer Help With the Smell of Smoke?

Get rid of the smell of smoke, consider using an air purifier
The smell of cigarette smoke lingers indoors, and leaves its odor on clothing, upholstery, curtains and other areas. If you want to get rid of the smell of smoke, consider using an air purifier. Home air purifiers come in two main types: those with high-efficiency particulate air filters, known as HEPA, or ionizing filters. For best results, you may want to install both versions. Have a question? Get an answer from an appliance repair specialist now!

Ionizers
Air ionizing purifiers work by creating negative ions, causing particles in the air to magnetically attract and come together. These particles, now too large to remain in the air, fall out and are no longer particles people breathe in. Air ionizing purifiers can remove airborne particles as tiny as 0.01 microns. It neutralizes cigarette smoke and other fumes. The machine's negative ions circulate throughout an area, allowing it to remove particles throughout the room.

Drawbacks
An ionizing air purifier does not actually collect the majority of enlarged particles it takes out of the air. Dusting or vacuuming is required to remove these particles. It does not kill germs, and while it does not kill fungi, it does take them out of the air circulation. It kills certain viruses, but not all. It does not take chemicals out of the air. However, using a HEPA air filter to complement the ionizing air purifier enables ionized particle collection.

Needlepoint Ionization
The most common type of ionizing air purifier, the needlepoint variety, works by charging the particulates right near the unit. It is effective for smoke, as well as pet dander, pollen and dust. Negative ions live only about half a minute, and coverage extends to a maximum of 500 square feet. For efficiency, move the unit around the house or purchase multiple units to run simultaneously.

Radio Ionization
A newer technology, radio ionization is similar to the needlepoint version except that it uses a radio wave, ionizing air through walls or other impediments for approximately 50 feet in each direction from the air purifier. This means it is not limited to the room in which it is stationed, and it can clean the air of an entire house. It is recommended by manufacturers for removing the smell of cigarette and cigar smoke and related odors.

Will Air Purifiers Help Sinus Problems at Night?

Air Purifiers Help Sinus Problems at Night
The National Library of Medicine states, "the use of a HEPA filtration system can be a helpful aid in controlling the amount of allergens circulating in the air." Air purifiers effectively remove pollutants and allergens from indoor air such as pollen, dust and pet dander. It is not only recommended to use an air purifier at night, but throughout the day as well. An air purifier can greatly reduce the amount of airborne particles that add to sinus issues, alleviating most, if not all of your sinus issues at night.

Use with a Humidifier
Use an air purifier in combination with a humidifier to get the most out of your night's sleep. While an air purifier eliminates the allergens and irritants found in the air, a humidifier will maintain proper moisture to reduce the irritation and inflammation in the sinus cavity, according to the Mayo Clinic. Run the air purifier during the night along with a humidifier set to 40 percent humidity. Some purifiers are a two-in-one combination of a purifier and humidifier in one unit.

Use Essential Oils
Place a damp washcloth over the outtake of the air purifier with a few drops of essential oils. Use eucalyptus and peppermint oils to help relieve congestion and tea tree oil and grapefruit seed extract to help with sinus infections, according to Wavelengths Natural Health. Once the washcloth is dry, it needs to be rewet with a new application of essential oils. It is best to place the washcloth over the air purifier an hour before going to bed while shutting the door to trap the vapors in the room. Rewet the washcloth right before going to bed to get the most out of the essential oils.

Run it All Day
Purchase a portable air purifier for your place of employment or wherever you spend most of your time in the day. While the air purifier will help reduce the sinus issues at night, it would be even more helpful if you could breathe in purified air all day long. Allow the air purifier in your bedroom to run all day, even if you're not home to keep the air as clean as possible. Keep the door closed to restrict any animal dander, dust or allergens from entering the air in the bedroom.

Air Purifier vs. Ionizer

Girl with allergies blowing her nose.
Both air purifiers and ionizers work to remove the kinds of contaminants from indoor air that can make life miserable for allergy sufferers and those with respiratory illnesses. Air filtration purifiers use a different air-cleaning technology than that used by ionizers, a type of purifier that uses electrostatic charges to clean the air, but some air-cleaning units employ multiple technological approaches to maximize their purification capabilities. Have a question? Get an answer from an appliance repair specialist now!

What Air Purifiers Do?

Mechanical filtration purifiers pass air through filter material that traps pollutants and allergens such as dust, pollen, smoke and animal dander, the types of contaminants that are most troublesome to asthma and allergy sufferers, children, the elderly and pets. High-efficiency particulate air filters are certified by the U.S. Department of Energy as being capable of removing at least 99.97 percent of particles 3 microns in diameter or larger, and they are very effective at trapping dust, smoke, mold spores and pollen. Filters that don't achieve a true HEPA rating are typically capable of trapping dust and pet dander, but they may allow smaller particles, such as spores and pollen, to pass through. Some purifiers also use activated carbon filters to remove some -- but not all -- gaseous pollutants and odors from the air as well.

How Ionizers Are Different?

Ionizers release negatively charged ions into the air, and these ions impart their charges to pollutant particles, which causes the particles to stick to each other or objects in the room and settle out of the air. Some mechanical filtration purifiers also incorporate a mechanism that gives an electric charge to pollutant particles as they pass through the unit; the charged particles then stick to an oppositely charged plate inside the purifier. Ionizers and electrostatic purifiers can be effective at removing small particles, such as bacteria, from the air, but they may be less effective than mechanical filters at trapping larger particles such as dust and dander, making them less helpful to allergy and asthma sufferers.

How the Devices are Rated?
Purifiers are rated according to how effective they are at removing contaminants from the air. Mechanical filters are classified by a minimum efficiency reporting value; high-efficiency filters have MERV ratings between 14 and 16, and HEPA filters have MERV ratings between 17 and 20. The Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers' Clean Air Delivery Rate values measure the volume of purified air that passes through a given purifier; a purifier with a CADR number between 98 and 130 is able to effectively clean the air in a midsize room.

Purifier and Ionizer Limitations
Purifiers can remove only airborne contaminants, and units that rely on mechanical filters or electrostatic precipitators can purify only the air that actually passes through the unit. Because many pollutants and allergens settle out of the air and onto surfaces quickly, they may avoid the action of the purifier and stay in the room. Electrostatic purifiers and ionizers produce ozone, which is a respiratory irritant and may have an adverse effect on those who suffer from asthma or other respiratory problems.

The Best Air Purifiers to Cover Smoke Smells

Smoke not only smells bad but is harmful to the lungs.
Smoke is a very unpleasant smell for many who inhale it. The smoke smell can get into clothes and other objects. Smoke can seem to seep through just about anything and often cannot be contained within rooms. Many air purifiers have been created that can suck the smoke odor out of the air. However, these purifiers can only handle so much smoke before they simply become ineffective. One of the most common sources of smoke is from cigarettes. Have a question? Get an answer from an appliance repair specialist now!

Ultraviolet Lights
Smoke air purifiers are often created to remove the smell of cigarette smoke. The purifier engages in ionization (removing charged particles), filters out carbon and also sanitizes the air using an ultraviolet (UV) light, according to Inspired Living.

Smoke Eliminator
The Airpura T-600 Smoke Eliminator Air Purifier is designed specifically for removing smoke from heavily smoky areas. This large purifier has a very deep and thick carbon filter. Felt gaskets seal the filter chamber to keep the smoke smell from seeping out, according to Inspired Living. The filter can handle up to 25 simultaneous smokers in one room.

The Multi-tech
The multi-tech S3500 has a very powerful fan that can remove smoke smells from large rooms. The smoke-filled air is sucked into highly efficient filters that can trap particles, including smoke particles, cleansing the air, according to Inspired Living. Negative ion pollutants are destroyed by the UV light contained in this purifier as are any airborne bacteria.

Air Oasis
The air oasis light commercial purifier is often used in areas where there is a heavy amount of smoke, such as a smoky bar. This purifier not only removes smoke smells but is also one of the best purifiers for removing and killing harmful bacteria, which makes the Air Oasis a useful addition to medical facilities, according to Inspired Living. The purifier also requires very little maintenance and is capable of removing smoke smells from clothing if the purifier is placed inside of the closet.

Vents
The most effective way to remove smoke from an area is to have smokers smoke in a certain designated area that has powerful vents that continually remove the air from the room while replacing the air with fresh air, according to Get Rid of Smoke Smell Air Purifier. Companies that do not have designated smoking areas can ask smokers to smoke outside. However, these outside smokers sometimes harm those entering the building. Some institutions do not allow smoking anywhere nearby.

The Best Air Purifiers for Cigarette Smoke

A man holds a lit cigarette over an ash tray.
Air purifiers can improve the air quality inside your home by trapping allergy-inducing particles from pollen, dust and cigarette smoke. However, not all air purifiers are equally capable of filtering out specific types of pollution. If you live with a heavy smoker and need relief, choose an air purifier designed to trap both the particles and gaseous elements of cigarette smoke. Have a question? Get an answer from an appliance repair specialist now!

Honeywell 50250
If you don't suffer from severe allergies or asthma, but would like to have cleaner air in a home you share with a smoker, the mid-range Honeywell 50250 is the best choice, according to the Galt Home Buying Guide. Available as of early 2011 for $150, the Galt Guide states that this high-efficiency particulate arresting (HEPA) filter traps 99 percent of all particles. This will remove almost all parts of cigarette smoke from the air. Some gaseous elements will be left behind, but the smell will be gone and the smoke won't leave a film on your walls or ceiling.

IQAir HealthPro Plus HEPA
The top-rated air purifier on the Air Purifier Power website is the IQAir HealthPro Plus HEPA because of its ability to clean indoor air more thoroughly than other models. People with severe breathing issues who need the cleanest air possible should find that this purifier is capable of producing air with zero particles left in it, based on multiple expert tests conducted by Consumer's Digest, Newsweek and other testers. A prefilter and HEPA media filter trap large and fine particles, but the Plus model also contains an odor and chemical trapping filter that captures the gaseous elements of cigarette smoke. As of 2014 it retails for around $900.
IQAir HealthPro Plus HEPA
Morck Air HealthMate
The Morck Air HealthMate provides better air filtration than smaller models but doesn't have the high price tag of the top of the line purifiers. It can't capture some of the smallest particles that make up chemical fumes, reports Consumer Search, but its HEPA and carbon filtration pack trap all of the elements of cigarette smoke. Unlike models that require monthly filter replacements, the HealthMate runs for three to five years without a new filter. It is available for $100 more or less as of 2015. http://www.morck-cleaning.com/products_info/Air-Purifier-MK-AP1001-275061.html
Morck Air Purifier
Rabbit Air BioGS
Lower-end air purifiers like the Honeywell 50250 are a good choice for cigarette odor control in small rooms, but if your living room is around 600 square feet, you may need the Rabbit Air BioGS. Designed for larger rooms, the Galt Home Buying Guide website notes that this popular model can handle large spaces and features washable filters. The HEPA filter traps 99 percent of smoke particles, so allergy sufferers who are reacting to the gases in cigarette smoke may not find it helpful. As of 2014 this model retails for $330.
